Synopsis: Emerald Fennell's take on Emily Brontë's classic follows the tempestuous, all-consuming relationship between Catherine Earnshaw (Margot Robbie) and Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi), the foundling taken in by her family, as their bond curdles into obsession, class conflict and eventual ruin on the Yorkshire moors.
Review: Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights is a vapid, hollow retelling of Emily Brontë's brilliant novel, and not only because it covers just half of the story; that's no crime in itself, and there's plenty to admire in this telling of Heathcliff and Cathy's early chapters. The issue is how leisurely it disregards the rest of the novel's character development in favour of surface-level melodrama. Obsessed with soft erotica, Fennell's film often resembles a period-piece music video more than a considered adaptation, all style, Charli XCX needle-drops, heaving bodices, with little underneath. The performances are largely fine without being memorable, Robbie and Elordi included, save for Martin Clunes, who is genuinely tragic and decrepit in all the best ways, stealing every scene he's afforded. Overall, this proved to be a frustrating, all-surface misfire.
