Synopsis: Urchin follows Mike (Frank Dillane), a rough sleeper trapped in a cycle of addiction and self-destruction on the streets of London, as he's given a fragile shot at rebuilding his life. Written and directed by Harris Dickinson in his feature debut, the film traces the strange, repeating patterns that keep pulling Mike back under.

Review: Harris Dickinson's writing-directing debut is a remarkably accomplished first feature, announcing a genuine new voice behind the camera as well as in front of it. Frank Dillane anchors the film with a raw, live-wire central performance as Mike, evoking equal parts sympathy and frustration as a man perpetually sabotaging his own progress. Dickinson's direction has a loose, observational confidence that never tips into miserabilism, aided enormously by Alan Myson's score, an 80s-indebted, Tangerine Dream-esque synth sound that drives the film's more kinetic, intense sequences with an energy akin to the Safdie brothers' collaborations with Daniel Lopatin. If the back half occasionally loses some of its early focus, it's a minor complaint against a debut this assured, one that marks both Dickinson and Dillane as talents worth watching closely.
