Synopsis: Set in 1970s Massachusetts, The Mastermind follows James Blaine Mooney (Josh O'Connor), an unemployed carpenter and family man who plans an ambitious heist of four paintings from a suburban museum. Aided by a small crew of accomplices, JB soon finds that keeping hold of the stolen art proves far harder than the theft itself, sending his life into a tailspin against the backdrop of a country consumed by the Vietnam War.

Review: Kelly Reichardt's latest continues her run of low-key American character studies, trading her usual rural settings for the suburban art world of 1970s Massachusetts. As JB Mooney, an unemployed carpenter turned amateur art thief, Josh O'Connor brings a quiet, watchable unease to a man perpetually out of his depth, though the performance stops short of being genuinely memorable. Reichardt's laconic pacing, so effective in First Cow and Certain Women, here feels less purposeful, stretching a slight premise into a subtly melancholic slow-burn that occasionally tests patience rather than rewards it. The film's period detail and jazz-inflected score lend it a handsome, lived-in texture, and there's a wry, Melville-indebted control to the heist itself. Still, for all its craft, The Mastermind ultimately amounts to a neatly compact, thoroughly competent addition to Reichardt's filmography rather than a standout entry within it.
