Synopsis: Guillermo del Toro's gothic retelling of Mary Shelley's classic follows Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac), a brilliant but egotistical scientist who succeeds in bringing new life to a creature (Jacob Elordi) of his own making, with devastating consequences for creator and creation alike. Review: Guillermo del Toro finally gets to make the monster movie he's dreamed of for decades, and it shows in every gothic flourish of this handsome, big-swing adaptation. Jacob Elordi is the film's real triumph, embodying the creature's physical infancy with unnerving precision while locating a genuine sympathy beneath the horror. Oscar Isaac, by contrast, leans fully into Victor's self-regard, a foil that sharpens rather than dilutes Elordi's pathos. Del Toro's world-building is where the film truly comes alive: the crumbling castle and the blind man's cottage both conjure a sense of phantasm that recalls his very best work, aided by Dan Laustsen's sumptuous cinematography and Alexandre Desplat's score. It occasionally buckles under its own scale and 150-minute runtime, but as bombastic, big-hearted monster cinema, this is del Toro operating close to the height of his powers.
