Synopsis: Picking up shortly after 28 Years Later, The Bone Temple follows Spike (Alfie Williams) as he falls under the influence of Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell), the unsettling leader of a violent cult known as the Jimmys. Meanwhile, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) continues his dangerous study of the infected, including the formidable Alpha, Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry).
Review: The 28 series has always been dark and gruesome in its apocalyptic vision, but this latest instalment, directed by Nia DaCosta from another sharp Alex Garland script, includes some of the most horrific sequences in the whole franchise, matching genuine nihilistic violence with unflinching gore. That said, it also delivers some of the saga's most enthralling and, at times, beautiful sequences, high-stakes drama rendered with real visual ambition, not least a particularly pertinent Iron Maiden needle-drop. There's a great, combustible central chemistry between Ralph Fiennes and Jack O'Connell, playing off each other as two very different visions of survival, while the younger cast, led by Alfie Williams, are uniformly excellent, capturing both the innocence and the loss of innocence demanded by this increasingly anarchic world. A bolder, stranger sequel than expected.
