Synopsis: Set in 1950s New York, Marty Supreme follows Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet), a hustler with grand, self-mythologising ambitions to become a champion table tennis player, whatever the cost. Gwyneth Paltrow co-stars as Kay Stone, a faded Hollywood actress who becomes entangled in his single-minded pursuit of greatness.
Review: Josh Safdie's solo directorial return trades his and brother Benny's usual New York hustle for the 1950s world of competitive table tennis, and the results are genuinely thrilling when they land. Timothée Chalamet's committed, twitchy performance as Marty Mauser captures a certain kind of American self-belief curdling into delusion, but watching a spoilt, sub-par athlete parade his entitlement for the best part of two and a half hours grows wearing well before the credits roll. Daniel Lopatin's score is used with real precision, propelling the film's more frantic stretches, and Gwyneth Paltrow is a genuine highlight as Kay Stone, a solemn, deeply unhappy former movie star who brings welcome stillness to the chaos. Ultimately, though, Safdie's film is too self-indulgent for its own good, padded with occasionally drawn-out scenes of repetitive mania that dilute rather than sharpen its considerable energy.
