Synopsis: Ryan Coogler’s Sinners plunges into the 1930s Deep South, uniquely blending horror, musical, and historical drama. The film follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan) as they try leave their troubled lives behind by returning to their Mississippi hometown to start again. However, their ambitious attempts to start anew are impacted at the arrival of otherworldly forces.
Review: Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is an intriguingly ambitious film, uniquely blending horror, musical and historical drama within its 1930s Deep South setting. It impressively establishes a Black American community on the cusp of civil rights, with the twins embodying a false liberation. The film’s most compelling aspect is its powerful use of music, particularly blues, which Coogler deftly portrays as both a political force and a rebellious weapon. This musical integration, while occasionally feeling 'on the nose' in its past/present blending, adds a rhythmic, almost From Dusk Till Dawn-esque intensity. Jack O’Connell delivers an eerie turn as Dylan, with his creepiness wonderfully encapsulated in the performance of the traditional Scottish/Irish song "Well Mountain Thyme". Though its vast ambition sometimes pulls in too many directions, potentially diluting its focus, Sinners remains a very enjoyable and entertaining experience. It, ultimately, stands as a promising example of an original and thought-provoking blockbuster.
