Synopsis: Mexican cartel leader, Manitas (Karla Sofía Gascón), wants to disappear and transition into a woman, enlisting the aid o lawyer, Rita (Zoe Saldaña), to orchestrate her new life as Emilia Pérez. As Emilia attempts to reconnect with her estranged wife, Jessi (Selena Gomez), and children, her past threatens to violently unravel her meticulously constructed new identity in a bizarre blend of musical, dram and gangster cinema.

Review: Emilia Pérez is an undeniably bizarre cinematic concoction, attempting to fuse musical, drama and gangster genres. While its ambition is clear, the film falters by becoming self-congratulatory about its unique nature. It confidently switches between profoundly serious themes like gender transition and the brutal reality of the Mexican drug trade, yet these weighty subjects are undercut by musical numbers that feel oddly crass and basic. This jarring juxtaposition, rather than offering a fresh perspective, keeps audiences at arm's length, making it difficult to forge an emotional bond with characters who often make unsympathetic choices. The development of these characters can feel obtuse, undermining any potential nuance. Notably, the song during the plastic surgery sequence, intended perhaps for dramatic weight, veers into the ridiculous and silly. Ultimately, Emilia Pérez often feels too caught up in its own peculiarity, leaving audiences questioning what there is to care about by its deft conclusion.
