Synopsis: A uniquely fantastical take on the life of pop star Robbie Williams. The film visualises Williams' journey through a CGI monkey (motion-captured by Jonno Davies, voiced by Williams), exploring his rise, struggles with fame and addiction and eventual resurgence, both personally and professionally.

Review: Michael Gracey’s Better Man is a surprisingly enjoyable and visually inventive musical biopic. Its most striking element, the portrayal of Robbie Williams as a CGI monkey, is executed with impressive detail; the expressive animation meticulously ages ‘young monkey Robbie’ through to ‘middle-aged monkey Robbie’ complete with authentic attire. This unique approach transforms what could be a mere gimmick into a powerful lens, allowing for inventive set pieces, such as a stunning, all-singing, all-dancing sequence on Oxford Street. The excellent choreography consistently contributes to engaging performances. While the core story of Williams' life—its highs, lows, and battles with addiction—is not particularly unique against the usual rock 'n' roll biopic rollercoaster, the film’s presentation fosters an unexpected intimacy and depth. Despite watching an ape embody a real person, Better Man does an impressive job of connecting with the viewer, offering fresh visuals that hint at future possibilities for CGI technology and storytelling.
