Synopsis: La Chimera follows Arthur (Josh O'Connor), a troubled English archaeologist haunted by the disappearance of his lover, Beniamina. Drawn into the clandestine world of tombaroli (grave robbers) in 1980s Tuscany, Arthur uses his unique gift of dowsing to locate ancient Etruscan tombs filled with priceless artifacts. As he delves deeper into this illicit trade, his obsession with the past and his grief for Beniamina intertwine, blurring the lines between reality and dreams.

Review: La Chimera is a visually stunning and emotionally resonant exploration of grief, obsession and the allure of the past. Director Alice Rohrwacher masterfully weaves together elements of realism and fantasy, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that is both haunting and beautiful. Josh O'Connor delivers a brilliant performance as the melancholic Arthur, his every gesture conveying the depths of his character's longing. While the film’s meandering plot may frustrate some viewers, it ultimately serves to mirror Arthur's own fragmented state of mind, the symbol of a red string being a connective thread to the past and, indeed, the afterlife. The dreamlike sequences, here, though at times disorienting, are imbued with a poetic beauty that lingers long after the credits roll. With a fittingly melancholic conclusion, brutal yet tragically beautiful in the way it ties up the fate of our protagonist, La Chimera is a haunting and evocative film that rewards patient viewing.
