Synopsis: Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage) is a mild-mannered biology professor mostly content with his modest suburban life who finds himself the subject of global curiosity when people around the world begin dreaming about him.
Review: An absurdist exploration of identity, ego, and the collective unconscious, Dream Scenario subverts expectations at every turn thanks to Nicolas Cage's predictably unhinged lead performance. Borgli's trippy visuals and warped dream logic immerse us in the uncanny scenarios where Paul watches passively, before his darker instincts take over in surreal nightmare sequences. Dream Scenario succeeds thanks to its sharp satire of viral fame and talent for spinning an engrossing mystery out of the peculiar premise. The bizarre dream cameos offer amusing surprises until troubling implications set in. Cage, sporting a fittingly comical hairpiece, makes Paul's hunger for recognition entirely believable even as he becomes more unhinged and unlikeable. Supporting turns from Julianne Nicholson as Paul's exasperated wife and Michael Cera as an opportunistic PR rep flesh out the social realities Paul inanely ignores. For all its absurdity, Dream Scenario ultimately never loses sight of the humanity that drive its narrative.
