Review:  Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest is a towering achievement in holocaust cinema. Unfolding with stark elegance, his minimalist approach envelopes audiences in the horrors of Auschwitz from the perspective of a Nazi commandant and his wife. Through crisp, sterile visuals and a suffocating industrial soundtrack, the mundane domestic pursuits of the HΓΆss family play out in the foreground while the unimaginable atrocities permeate the periphery. Bolstered by controlled performances from Christian Friedel and Sandra HΓΌller, evil is presented not as bombastic but as a force growing insidiously from whispers and averted eyes into utter devastation. Heightening the visual potency are mesmerising thermal night vision dream sequences, presenting a plane of fantasy and hope against the stark realities of the world that the HΓΆss family inhabit. The balancing of reality with fantasy, normalcy with depravity, are among Glazer's key achievements, here, as he captures the film’s subject matter with devastating effectiveness.
