Review: David Fincher's latest film The Killer is a stylishly crafted but emotionally hollow crime thriller. Fincher's trademark aesthetic is on full display here — the cinematography is sleek and moody, bathed in shades of black, grey and steel blue. He takes full advantage of the global settings, with shots of tropical Dominican skylines being captured with the same vividness as dark, rainy cityscapes. The production design is impeccably detailed as well, with Fincher's eye for technical accuracy recreating a convincing underworld of criminals and cops. But for all its technical mastery, The Killer lacks an emotional core which viewers can latch onto. Fassbender is chillingly effective as the nameless hitman, but at arm's length from the viewer. None of the supporting characters makes much of an impression either. While Fincher succeeds in creating an absorbing sense of atmosphere and dread, it comes at the expense of character development or human connection.
