Review: Guardians 3 offers the ragtag band of misfits one last weird and wild space adventure, though it’s hampered by disturbing animal abuse scenes. The film reunites the Guardians gang, initially fragmented, as they contend with an intergalactic dictator (played by Chukwudi Iwuji) and, in the process, deeper existential questions. As ever, the sharp dialogue and situational humour hit the mark, thanks to Gunn’s script and the cast’s comedic chemistry. But intense scenes of animal experimentation push the limits of taste. Though integral to Rocket’s origin story, the cruel animal depictions feel excessive. The CGI-heavy action sequences also become repetitive and blend into the familiar mirage of Marvel battles. Still, fans will likely appreciate the emotional conclusion to Gunn’s cosmic trilogy, good for both tears and laughs. Uneven yet entertaining, Guardians 3 is a mostly satisfying finale for Marvel’s oddest heroes. Just brace yourself for some unfortunate cruelty along the way.
