Synopsis: Follows the FBI interrogation of Reality Winner, a young intelligence analyst who leaked classified information about Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.
Review: Reality is a tense film that effectively captures the visual and auditory experiences of a real life interrogation. Here you feel every turn of phrase and awkward quip from the FBI agents interrogating our protagonist through understated sound design. Based almost entirely on the transcript of the interrogation of Reality Winner, the film proves that the heavy dramatization isn’t always needed to tell a true story. Sweeney gives a tour-de-force performance as Winner, capturing her intelligence, her idealism, and her growing sense of fear and isolation as the interrogation progresses. The film's director, Tina Satter, brings out the nuances of the lead’s performance, as she creates a sense of unease in the minimalist spaces of Winner’s home. Reality is not an easy film to watch, but it is an important one. It is a reminder of the dangers of government overreach and the importance of whistleblowing - both today and forever.
