Review: This blood-soaked comedy lacks the emotional depth to engage viewers. Its juvenile humour often misses the mark, and instead of delivering subversive filmmaking, the film relies on excessive gore. Although the action scenes offer temporary comic relief, they are clumsily integrated into the narrative. Indeed much of Renfield operates with intense film logic where all wrong doings can be easily resolved in service of the plot. In this light, all the death only detracts from the drama, acting nothing more as a chance to flex some showy cinematography and dodgy CGI. The standout aspect of Renfield lies in the performances. Hoult impresses as Renfield by injecting much-needed charm into his otherwise gawkish character (think 90s Hugh Grant if he was trapped in an immortal curse). Cage is also entertaining as Dracula, embracing physical transformations and extravagant costumes. Despite occasional laughter, Renfield is a forgettable attempt at revitalising the Dracula tale.
