Synopsis: The menu is about a young couple who dine at a luxurious restaurant on a secluded island, where the renowned chef, played by Ralph Fiennes, serves a sumptuous meal with some unexpected twists. Anya-Taylor Joy stars as one half of the couple, alongside Nicholas Hoult. What begins as a high end culinary experiencing soon turns into a nightmare.

Review: The Menu is a revenge film best served with little expectation. Dishing up inspired performances from Ralph Fiennes, Nicolas Hoult and Anya Taylor-Joy, the film’s humour is bitter and seasoned with moments of genuine horror and brutality. However, the film lacks a tasty amuse bouche that is strong enough to pull these interesting ingredients together. There are a lot of great scenes but, cumulatively, these moments do little more than wet the palette for something with a greater payoff. Individually they almost feel like sketches with characters entering mini development stages that aren’t touched upon later. Too often the drama feels implausible to the extent that its ridiculousness is distracting, not entertaining. Rather than indulge in any more culinary puns, I’ll simply say this; the menu is a good, but not great work of drama comedy. A flavour of the month more than it is a seasoned classic. Dine carefully.
