Synopsis: Tom Cruise returns as Peter “Maverick” Mitchell, this time expected to lead a team of young Top Gun pilots into a dangerous mission - blowing up an underground uranium bunker. If this already challenging mission didn’t sound tough enough, he must also contend with the turmoil of teaching Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his beloved friend Goose, whose passing has tarred much of Maverick’s professional career and personal wellbeing since the events of the first film. Get your wings ready for some nostalgia-driven action.

Review: Top Gun: Maverick not only satisfies the expectations of fans, but also surpasses the shortcomings of its predecessor. Aided by the audacity of leading man, Tom Cruise, who insisted on minimal CGI and maximum flying for this sequel, and a more refined screenplay from Mission Impossible Director Christopher McQuarrie and collaborators, this film feels epic. Even without the joyful chemistry between the young pilots, Maverick would be a solid, high-stakes action film. Yet with the complimentary performances from Miles Teller, Greg Powell (Hangman) and Monica Barbaro (Phoenix) in particular, this film comes to life, each scene packed with smile-inducing humour and comradery. It treads a fine line between nostalgia and innovation that audiences willingly engage with throughout its runtime. However, at no point do we feel like we’re being taken for a ride, that is, a ride that doesn’t have some payoff or gratification, like the film’s spellbinding final act.
