Taking place over 24 hours, X follows an adult film crew with high hopes and low morals. Led by sleazy director Wayne Gilroy (Martin Anderson) and leading lady Maxine (Mia Goth), they aim to make a film that is both 'dirty' and 'high art'. Only problem? Their lodgings for the night belong to an unwelcoming old couple, Howard (Stephen Ure) and Pearl (Goth in prosthetics). The dichotomy between smut and sublime can be seen as a metaphor for X, a film that shares its story with the help of arthouse distributor A24. However, X appears more direct; a surface-level splatterfest that doesn't take itself too seriously. West's playful filmmaking, characterised by visceral montage editing and a kitsch country soundtrack, is imperative to this entertainment. Submitting yourself to the film’s charm might feel like a guilty pleasure, but under West’s assured vision, you feel liberated (albeit a little repulsed too sometimes).
