Cold ice gleans over Robert Eggers new film, which has its hands in both Norse Mythology and literature. Sometimes the ice is literal, shown with startling beauty by cinematographer Jarin Blaschke as he captures barren Icelandic landscapes. Other times it is figurative and personified in the film’s stern seriousness; after all, this is a story about Amleth's (Alexander SkarsgΓ₯rd) vengeance against the man who killed his father. The persistence of both forms is what makes the film such a rigid viewing experience, so wrapped up in its mantra that that vengeance is an ongoing cycle, that there is little room for thorough engagement. The violence shown on screen is suitably nasty, but it doesn’t unnerve in the same way as Eggers’ previous work. It’s a film I may warm to in time, but for the moment like the ice we see and feel, The Northman left me a tad cold.
