The Batman is an undeniably original (and imperfect) entry in the DC universe, which takes inspiration from the visceral action of graphic novels instead of film adaptations. Director Matt Reeves creates a shadowy, silhouette-driven Gotham reminiscent of the best film noirs. All the cast are acting with the same brooding menace and suspicion. I admit that a few lighter moments (both visually and thematically) would have been welcome, but Robert Pattinson's superb chemistry with Zoe Kravtiz makes this possibly bleak backdrop exciting. Occasionally, though, the pendulum tips into excessiveness, as Paul Dano shows with his overcooked performance as the Riddler or in a later scene introducing an all-too-familiar villain. It’s a film with many moving parts; one that will compel sequels, yet remains unafraid to stand alone. There are missteps, but Reeves' portrayal of Bruce Wayne as a vigilante on a quest for self-discovery offers exciting possibilities for future stories.
