Provocateur. Crazy. Genius. The evolution of Chicago-born artist Kanye West has been the point of much cultural speculation since he first broke into the mainstream music charts with his 2004 debut LP The College Dropout. Kanye's path to stardom began long before this, when he produced beats for Jay-Z and cast bold interviews with MTV where he described his rise to fame. Jeen-Yuhs focuses heavily on these seminal years for Kanye, mainly because director Clarence “Coodie” Simmons Jr. was closest to the hip-hop star at this time. Footage from Kanye's more recent, erratic years in the spotlight lack the same clarity as these early episodes, but still give an intimate look into his mental health struggles. As with much of Kanye's recent discography, the documentary would have benefited from light editing. However, fans will certainly be fascinated by his seemingly unwavering determination to figure out his place in the world.
