Fresh is an assured debut from Mimi Cave, who balances humour and horror in this story of a romance gone awry. Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is hopelessly single and down-on-her-dating-luck. That is, until she meets Steve (Sebastian Stan), a doctor who radiates charm. If you haven't seen the trailer, you might think that the film's first 20 minutes are telling of how the narrative will develop. However, Cave has other, more gory ideas, most of which are handled with an astute visual presence; warping corridors and all-too-close close ups are rife here. The soundtrack is a similarly bold palette, which veers between traditional thriller strings and indie film nostalgia. There is even a particularly tense dinner scene that uses an orchestral cover of Radiohead's ‘Exit Music Music (For A Film)’ to amplify its tension. An a la carte menu of influences and ideas, Fresh is occasionally messy in its execution but remains pleasantly tied together by its leads' chemistry.
