It feels like musicals are finally getting the attention they deserve in cinema for the first time in a while. A musical number on the big screen has more emotional power than ever, whether it's Spielberg's remake of West Side Story or Lin-Manuel Armanda's In The Heights. Armada’s latest release - Tick, Tick…Boom! - is no exception. It follows the life of playwright, Jonathan Larsen, whose main fame came posthumously with Tick, Tick…Boom! and his tony-winning play Rent. The Larson of this film is struggling, but determined; joyous, but deflated as he wrestles between fading adolescence and pursuing his dream of being an artist. Garfield plays the role with heart and a commitment to every song, while the film’s major shortcoming is how it tries to parcel this quickbeat enthusiasm into a lot of short scenes. The result remains a lot of fun; song and dance, with a lot of heart too.
