Jane Campion’s new film is a purposefully slow drama that possesses both the frustrating and deeply intriguing elements that come with this type of storytelling. When George Burbank (Jesse Plemmons) gets married to widow Rose Gordon (Kirsten Dunst), his primitive brother Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) takes issue. In a series of power struggles and tragedies, Rose becomes increasingly dependent on alcohol to deal with the bullying he inflicts on her. Kodi Smit-McPhee is impressive in his introverted performance of Rose’s son, Peter, whose involvement grows as Phil becomes increasingly candid about his own past. Through Ari Wegner's wide shots, the film conveys an impression of openness and tranquillity, qualities that are ultimately derailed in its pensive conclusion. The level of enjoyment you get from this reveal is dependent upon your willingness to accept the visual dialogue that Campion presents; it’s a stilted relationship, second to those found throughout the film’s narrative.
