Peter Parker’s return offers a formula of nostalgia, comedy, and heartbreak. It is full-on good guy mode for Tom Holland this time around, as he relies on the avengers' Dr Strange to undo the trauma caused by Mysterio revealing his identity. Despite Jon Watts' familiarity with this era of the franchise, he mixes up some of his techniques to create a more visually exciting film. New York landscapes are grandiose and close-ups are used sparingly for maximum emotional impact. I didn’t have any qualms with the film's premise, which can sometimes be ridiculous, but I also didn’t leave the cinema with complete wonder or glee. Although I smiled when the cameos graced the screen, the story itself felt more like a makeshift cabinet to display these relics, rather than a solid framework that could have developed character arcs. Undoubtedly a fun and never-boring watch, but a classic? Time will tell.
