It’s all sun, fun and 70s rock music in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza - a “hang-out” movie which details the escapades of friends Alana (Alana Haim) and Gary (Cooper Hoffman) in the San Fernando Valley. A director of eclectic talent, Anderson’s new work feels like something of a regression from the increasingly refined filmmaking style that had preceded this film and that were typified by his 2019 release Phantom Thread. Unlike the quaintness of this previous release, Licorice Pizza possesses all those dynamic tropes of PTA’s earlier films like Hard Eight and Boogie Night, namely, camera movement and comically-absurd set pieces. There’s a lot of joy to be taken in the quick-witted chemistry between the film’s brilliant leads, but sometimes it all feels a bit indulgent, as the film’s expert director seems more comfortable in the realm of crude, sexual humour than he does in creating a genuinely affective relationship.
