Adam McKay's disaster movie-come-satire is a headache to watch. A movie about a cataclysmic meteor shower discovered by Astrologer Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), the film shows the ignorance of its world as they ignore Kate's warnings and Randall Mindy's (Leonardo Dicaprio's) advice. Every character feels like a cookie-cutter antagonist, backed up with overtly stupid dialogue, whether it's Jonah Hill and Meryl Streep as the mothers and sons of the presidential team or Mark Rylance as the introverted entrepreneur David Isherwell. Everything is two-dimensional and played for maximum ridiculousness. The presence of TimothΓ©e Chalamet as Kate's hapless fanboy provides some comic relief, but it comes too late. I suppose it's telling of our strange times that satirical work like this fails for being too obvious, as if audiences are already aware of its ridiculous caricatures. McKay's satire on the climate crisis may be urgent, but it still isn't funny or well-intended.
