Not as sensational as its trailer might suggest, not as stern or serious as its story might imply; House of Gucci wrestles between many opposing dramatical poles. The film follows the Gucci family through the relationship of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) and outsider Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga), a bond that begins with intense romance and ends in heartache and betrayal. Scott rearranges the supporting cast like chess pieces, receding the phantom presence of controlling father Rodolfo (Jeremy Irons) and advancing the buffoonish caricatures Aldo and son Paolo (Jared Leto). The end formation isn’t quite wrought enough to leave a lasting impression, with a final third that feels quite detached from the film’s flabby centre. There has, nonetheless, been a lot of deserved praise for the film’s two leading performances and the astute art direction and costume design, both of which are sure to garner nominations when awards season comes around.
