Retaining Margot Robbieβs erratic Harley Quinn and Joel Kinnaman and Rick Flag, The Suicide Squad is something of a sequel to David Ayerβs disastrous first stab at the story. There's more fun and originality this time around, as spectators are treated with a fresh flavour of anti-heroes, ranging from John Cena's buffoonish Peacemaker to Daniela Milchoir's Ratcatcher along with many others. Idris Elbaβs Bloodsport stands reluctantly as the βleaderβ of this group of misfits, dispatched to an enemy-infested island to find a government scientist gone rogue. Thereβs a lot of B-movie splatter, as one might expect from Gunn by now. I left the cinema undecided about the gore's effectiveness; sometimes it elevates the physical comedy, but too often it's recycled as a dark comic gag. This new DC instalment isnβt too dissimilar to its superhero contemporaries in this regard; thereβs a formula here, too, just wrapped in a 15+ certificate.
