Eternals has been preceded by a slew of negative reviews, but it’s not all bad. Under the threat of an imminent world disaster at the hands of age-old beasties known as the deviants, the eternals must unite once more. There’s also a broken love story between Gemma Chan (Sersi) and Richard Madden (Ikaris). The cast shine in a few scenes, with Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos) and Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo) bringing comedic relief to the sometimes lofty tone. And, visually, Zhao picks up where she left Nomadland, with sun-drenched frames that ground the otherworldly narrative in reality. Unfortunately, the film never quite manages to bring these elements together. Over a near three hour runtime, there’s just too many pockets of exposition or awkward interactions. While Eternals offers much to celebrate, it’s also frustratingly lacklustre compared to the usual high-stakes products that viewers have come to expect from the well-oiled Marvel machine.
