It’s easy to see how Dune has been called ‘unfilmable’, given its mammoth worldbuilding and, often, convoluted storylines. The central tenet is this; a young man - Paul Atriedes (Timothee Chalamet) begins to realise his destiny just as his family comes under attack. Director Denis Villeneuve wholly understands story and is never afraid to explore the intricacies that build up the desert world of Arakkis and the cutthroat politics that are intertwined with the House of Atreides, the villainous house of Harkonnen and the oft suppressed Fremen people. He respects the intelligence of the viewer without overpowering them with exposition (of which Dune has plenty). As the increasingly catastrophic events play out, my reservations lie in the film’s abrupt conclusion, which halts at the very moment when Paul’s journey is beginning to flourish. The promise that is “only the beginning” is, nevertheless, a reassuring pledge to end this part of the story.
