Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain - 💥💥💥💥

Director: Morgan Neville
Release Date: 16th July 2021
Hot Rating: 💥💥💥💥

It's a testament to Anthony Bourdain's acclaimed status as a cultural figure that this new documentary is released only three years after his death. The film follows the New Yorker's meteoric ascent to prominence and the popularity of his travel series — Parts Unknown — through archive footage and interviews with his closest acquaintances. Some of these events are cherry-picked and the filmmaker's decision not to interview Asia Argento, Bourdain's final partner before his suicide, reflects their cautious approach to his final years. Despite this, the various channels via which the audience hears and sees Bourdain come to life again feel breathtakingly beautiful and emblematic of his own commitment to storytelling. The documentary visually reflects Bourdain's own passion for cinema, with interpolated clips from movies creating a mosaic of his personal and cultural life. It's a cathartic experience for those who admired his work, if only for a brief duration.
