Visceral offerings from Canadian filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg. His second feature Possessor is a messy affair, with body-hopping, time-travelling, gut-wrenching drama delivered throughout its trim run time. In the near-future, assassin Vos (Andrea Rainsborough) is tasked with the job of killing billionaire big shot John Parse (will Sean Bean die in this film, you might ask?) and his daughter Katherine (Hanekke Talbot). Her vessel for this mission is sleazy drug dealer Colin (Christopher Abbott) who the assassin inhabits and with whom she subsequently forms an eerily uncanny relationship. Cronenberg maintains a level of dread throughout the punchy runtime, with little respite for the viewer. To some the gore will bare too much, if not already overwhelmed by the story's breakneck pacing. As an affective experience, however, the film succeeds through its sensory imagery and intense violence. It’s bleak, but incites more intrigue in Cronenberg as a filmmaker in his own right.
