Director/star of The Midnight Sky, George Clooney has created something of an enigma in his latest film. Shrouded with mystery, the film follows the erroneous journey of lone scientist Dr. Augustine Lofthouse, as he tries to make contact with a distant spacecraft. Further context peaks in here and there. Thirty years prior Lofthouse was tirelessly working on finding planets where humans could migrate to. Now, his worst fears have materialised in the global disaster in which he finds himself in the present, but the stakes never feel real enough to provoke our interest. The tone is similarly aloof without ever earning its melodramatic pomp. Clooney plays a desperate character but directs with even greater desperation. Everything is drab with a cool, steel finish. That being said, even the most inspired visual and auditory efforts can't rescue this rogue mission.
