Most simply, Soul is a film about life and death, the latter of which protagonist, Joe β a shortcoming musician turned teacher β finds himself wrestling with after a near-death experience sends him into a land where 'souls' find their bodies. The trailer led me to believe that the breadth of Soul would take place here, where small, marshmallow-like souls frolic whilst lost souls are shunned to outer desserts, yet the film teeters between reality and fantasy throughout. Its a generally joyful ride, with inserts into Joe's mundane life being elevated by the chaotic sidekick, '22' (Tina Fey), a soul who is continually misguided in her search for a life. Too often, however, do ideas go astray, with unfocused fun being propped up by the studios vibrant animation.
