When it was announced that Aaron Sorkin's next project, following the so-so success of Molly's Game (2017), would focus on the infamous 1969 trial of seven democrat activists, anticipation was rife. The drama feels more relevant than ever and, while Sorkin himself has been coy on the film's contemporary influences, there's something intensely topical about the police brutality and political corruption that is interwoven throughout the narrative. A credit to the time-hopping story, which takes place between the initial demonstration at the 1968 Democratic National Convention and the trial that began in March 1969, is that the audience gets an omniscient insight into the complexities of the case and the real-life figures who were under persecution. Not without its moments of hyperbole, the film is a sure fire return to form for the writer-director, with a stellar ensemble cast spanning from Mark Rylance, to Eddie Redmayne and Sacha Baron Cohen.
