Director and writer Charlie Kaufman continues his streak of innovative and original cinema with his latest work, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, an exercise in abstract thought, time and memory. To go into detail about the film's plot would risk jeopardising the brilliance of its mosaic structure, that is, the way in which it uses perspective and time to expose its characters vulnerabilities. Indeed, part of the film's success comes from the way in which it picks apart a conventional relationship story; a film about the loss of love and breaking up. Central to this story is Lucy, whose trip to visit her boyfriend Jake's family on a rural farm, is undercut with her morose thoughts that she is 'thinking of ending things'. How Kaufman maintains the enigma around this refrain is a testament to his originality and the way in which he packs symbolism, dark humour and violence into his images. Even with the director's tendency to self-indulge in his imagination, I'm Thinking of Ending Things remains perhaps his most impactful and vivid exploration of human mortality.
