Social media documentaries appear ever more relevant in today's political and economic climate, often shedding a light on the hidden consequences of our interactive lives. Jeff Orlowski's latest film is no exception. Most unique to this documentary is the way it actually goes right to the heart of the matter, interviewing those tech experts and silicon valley hotshots who have had a hand in some of the biggest social media companies. Balanced nicely with this primary research is a series of case studies and statistic reports that illustrate recent real-life incidents that have be traced to internet hysteria. Not content with this more-than-concerning analysis, The Social Dilemma also successfully navigates an endearing fictionalisation of how people's obsession with social media and phones, in large, can have serious implications. Admittedly a somewhat overwrought counterpart to the rest of the film, the seriousness of the film's overall message remains unhindered and as potent as ever.
