Jenny Popplewell's latest documentary is perhaps most interesting as a study in form. The film follows the disappearance of wife and mother of two Shannan Watts, and focuses on the investigation that followed, in which her husband, Chris Watts, was interrogated. Instead of taking a conventional retrospective approach to its story, the doc is made up almost entirely of original evidence from the investigation that includes CCTV and body cam footage, as well as numerous television news broadcasts. The footage that has been shot knits together this preexisting evidence to create a very holistic inspection of the events, with ruminations on how we present ourselves on social media and the interviewing process surrounding missing person cases. There's no doubt that its story is shocking and the sadness that unravels with its conclusions will be sure to linger on long after the case is closed and the credits finished.
