The case for Antonio Campus' directorial skills lies in his ability to unearth the abhorrent, and often unexplainable, characteristics of human nature. Such is both the brilliance and detriment of his latest film, The Devil All The Time, which appears more like a southern gothic fable rather than a mid twentieth century American period piece. The stories are meandering and connected through loose social and familial ties. Yet with the film spanning both World War One and Two, a more closer inspection of such historical events might have given greater depth to its bombastic characters. Nevertheless, with both Harry Melling and Robert Pattinson playing manic preachers, Riley Keogh as a femme fatale serial killer and Tom Holland leading the way as a troubled orphan, one thing that the film is not sparse on is stellar performances. The aloof grandiose of its ensemble cast is enough to maintain viewers' morbid curiosity.
