For its accolades, Tenet does offer the kind of epic action that director Christopher Nolan has been engineering since his work on the Dark Knight trilogy. While Nolan and his star-studded cast, led by rising stars John Michael Washington and Elizabeth Debicki, have been insistent that Tenet is not a movie about time travel, its cryptic locations and crosscutting assure viewers that time is not as it seems. To detail the plot much further is to pander to Tenet's insistent focus on story, something that Tenet boasts with glee. The metaphysics is a reductive explanatory notion, whose ham-fisted execution makes the characters feel like mere pawns in a game of chess. While viewers are usually enthralled by Nolan's storytelling ability the complexities of Tenet are so boldly apparent that by the time its story seems to be falling into place, viewers are left wondering where our sympathies should be left.
