Boys State is the latest feature from Apple's eagerly anticipated collaboration with NY production company, A24. The documentary follows a collection of seventeen year old boys who are taking part in a convention that allows young American men to play politicians over a week-long period in Texas. Spanning a near eighty-year period, the program has made headlines in recent years for the expectedly immature and ridiculous laws that the cohort have passed, even including a plan to secede Texas from the United States. While the documentary eagerly engrosses viewers with a similar patriotic sensationalism, detailing the rowdy ventures of some particularly eccentric party members, the film is, at its core, a pressing inspection of how political values begin to develop in male adolescents. With a feature-length run time of just under two hours, its scope is wide without ever feeling like the voyeuristic freak show that it could have been.
