Domestic damnation never looked so wry. The simple premise of Vivarium is that Tom (Jesse Eisenberg) and Gemma (Imagen Poohs) want to buy a house and settle down. They visit 'Yonder', an all-too-vast housing estate that they are guided around by an unsettling man named Martin (Jonathan Aris). Once the young couple realises that their house viewing may last longer than desired things become progressively weirder. Eisenberg and Potts have engaging chemistry, never quite sitting right with one another, but their characters are rather unlikeable, and their decisions often unmotivated. The introduction of a child, another freakish being whose voice is dubbed, feels like a gimmick for absurdity. One imagines that Vivarium could happily parade its badge of 'that's the point' for every criticism made against it, but the low down is that not an awful lot happens, and those ham-fisted metaphors about domestic mundanity don't make for fruitful viewing unless we care about our characters.
