In what is both a return to form (generally) and a return to director Justin Kurzel's Aussie homeland, True History of the Kelly Gang is a blistering new vision of one of Australia's most compelling figures. The film begins with the young Ned Kelly (Orlando Schwerdt), beset with poverty and violence in his family's home before George Mackay comes to embody the character's angst in his later years. It is every bit a fantasy as it is a 'biopic', that is, one that traces Kelly's continual resistance of British colonial rule. But Kurzel is aware of the regular appropriation of this tale and, in his own tongue-in-cheek way, creates a story that is historically unplaceable and visually extravagant. Yet like Kelly himself, the film suffers from an identity crisis, moving through sudden tonal shifts and character interactions as it pieces together a picture of the man and the outlaw himself.
