Family dynamics are at the heart of Trey Edward Shults' Waves. The film centres on the Williams, a middle-class family that strives for success. The diligent father, Ronald (Sterling K. Brown) is the driving force behind his son Tyler's (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) athletic success. When the glass ceiling shatters, Tyler's younger sister, Emily (Taylor Russell) must pick up the pieces in order to rebuild her broken family. The film is as grandiose in style it is devastating in content. With circling 360-degree shots and an almost imposing use of soundtrack, Shults' establishes himself as an important voice in contemporary U.S. cinema, particularly, breathing life into the melodramas of the classic Hollywood age. While America and its teenagers have changed significantly since these films, Shults' excessive narrative of love, loss and family, shows that the director is attuned to the struggles of his protagonists and the sympathies of his audience.
