The backlash from Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi (2018) has been persistent and aggressive yet, twelve months later, the dialogue surrounding this film has become a bit warmer with the release of The Rise of Skywalker, a concluding chapter to the franchise's new trilogy that feels like a different direction for the series, again. The film becomes subdued in the lengthy exposition that takes up its opening third, where audiences are expected to suspend their expectations of Rey's (Daisey Ridley) character development, and accept her suddenly unparalleled new powers all the whilst Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) remains in a semi-romantic telepathic conversation with the heroine. Nostalgic iconography is littered about this final feature with appearances from Carrie Fisher and Billy Dee Williams, yet these roles act more as band-aids, covering a much wider gash in the Star Wars franchise, and distracting viewers from the inadequacy of the trilogy's final act.
