A World War One film, constructed to appear as if it was shot in one continuous take, was not the most predictable of moves for director Sam Mendes. And yet, as the Roger Deakins' camera follows the journey of two young and bashful soldiers, Schofield (George MacKay) and Blake  (Dean-Charles Chapman), there's rigid confidence about the film. It couldn't be shot any other way. This creative choice, nonetheless, confines the film to somewhat limited parameters. Once the camera twirls and guides you through the French countryside or plunges you into the icy rivers nearby, a sense of distance, not intimacy, begins to emerge in the film. Our sympathies are aligned with the valiant efforts of Lance Corporal Schofield throughout the film, but there's little depth to his character (or any of the soldiers for that matter). What should be a nail-biting thriller feels more like a stylishly constructed obstacle course.
