Director: Noah Baumbach
Writer: Noah Baumbach
Release Date: 15th November 2019
Hot Rating: 💥💥💥💥💥
The handing over of the divorce papers from Nicole (Scarlett Johanssen) to her husband, Charlie (Adam Driver), sets into action the awkwardness that will become their marriage. Noah Baumbach and his cast are all reported to have included their own experiences with divorce in the film, which resonates in almost anecdotal moments where Nicole and Charlie interact with lawyers, family members and social workers. For a film that runs nearly two-and-a-half hours long, it efficiently balances the perspective of both husband and wife without ever losing sight of their own pain. Laura Dern and Ray Liotta are superbly devout lawyers set on settling the dispute, whilst Azhy Robertson as son, Henry, anchors his parent's relationship toward heartwrenching interactions. Perhaps the biggest success of Marriage Story is that at these most sombre moments, the film finds humour, albeit dark and pitiful, as a way of expressing the honestness of its characters.
