After a much-debated Star Wars feature, in which Johnson flexed his comic tendencies in a galaxy far far away, the director has brought things back to earth with a whodunnit reminiscent of Poirot. If the references aren't clear from the moment you meet detective Benoit Blanc, then Johnson is sure lather on further intertextual references to noir and sleuth genres as the action continues. The plot, a seemingly straightforward, but equally convoluted mystery that aims to discover who murdered Harold Thromeby on his 85th birthday, is not without its pitfalls. The Thromeby house, with its maximalist decor and nooks and crannies, is at the heart of the film's energy; when the drama spills out into downtown Massachusetts, the fun appears contrived and loses its effectiveness. The star-studded ensemble cast, too, fall victim to the breadth of experience and style, which often leaves interview scenes feeling like they're missing something richer.
